I’ve had the opportunity to work with a big brokerage, as well as (where I still work today) a boutique. Both taught and continue to teach me the realities an “employed” agent faces day to day. I wanted to create a list of tips for the new agents out there. I hope this helps and be sure to reach out to us, we’d love to hear your story.
This is the obvious but I really want to re iterate that this is a 24/7 gig. Like anything you wish to excel in, you must put in the time to practice. Whether it’s hosting open houses, or familiarizing yourself with contracts, set aside time to practice, and trust me it will pay off! However, because its a full time gig you MUST set aside time for yourself to recharge. It can easily suck you in, especially if you see success early. Speaking of time, this leads me to my next piece of advice.
It can be easy to lose track of time in this business. You will have day’s where you wish you had more time, and other instances where you don’t know what to do with all the extra time. Treat your time as a valuable commodity and be sure to block time to get tasks done such as phone calls, marketing campaigns, networking, etc. It helps to use your calendar and get reminded of what needs to be tackled for the day.
There will be a time when you’ve exhausted your database. Now What? You can’t afford to wait 3-6 months to ask your prospects if they’re ready to buy/sell. For all the newbies who gotten to this point, host as many open houses as possible! Whether they are listings from your brokerage, or listings from other realtors, open houses are an ideal space to meet new people, best part is you know they are proactively looking. Get creative and master open houses and expect to see your database grow.
I stand by this tip especially. I’ve experienced very slow moments with my business, and it led to contemplation of whether or not I Should continue. Pressures of reaching quota, family, not being able to pay your bills, it’s easy to get in your head and spiral out of control. SNAP OUT OF IT! Talk it out, whether it’s to your broker, wife/husband, friend, etc. have someone to talk to. These are challenges you can overcome, remember to breathe. This simple act can go a long ways of alleviating stress. Stay in good spirits, work hard and I promise you will overcome any adversities you face in this industry.
I say this but depending on your brokerage, this might look a little different for you. The benefits of working where I do is the flexibility and creative freedom we have. Our approach is being real with people and focus on lifestyle, which is different from most traditional brokerages that care about sales. We host parties, we write, take photos etc. Everyone has a unique specialty, find yours and hone in on it. Whether its marketing, hosting, negotiations, build that unique skill and have fun with it!
